Fall Camp Cancelled; Alternate Outdoor Activity Planned for Sat. Oct. 24 at Hidden Falls Park

posted Aug 12, 2019, 7:48 AM by Pack 1 Minneapolis Cub Scouts   [ updated Oct 21, 2020, 2:46 PM ]

It is with great disappointment that we regretfully announce that, due to the recent snowfall and a forecast for exceptionally cold weather for Saturday (daytime high of 30 degrees; nighttime high of 20), Pack 1 must cancel its Fall Camp at Stearns Scout Camp.

Most families that signed up for Fall Camp were not planning to stay the night, based on earlier weather reports, so we did consider switching to a Day-Camp-only mode. However, a majority of Pack 1 den leaders agreed that 30 degrees would be too cold to safely host archery and BB-gun shooting sessions during the day, and without those two highlight activities available to us, the leaders questioned if it made sense to drive almost 90 minutes to engage in alternate outdoor activities that we could just as easily enjoy nearby in a local park (i.e. hiking, sledding, snow fort building, etc.).

To that end, we are indeed planning to meet locally on Saturday, Oct. 24, for some alternate outdoor, camp-like activities -- roasting marshmallows for s'mores and a hike to a "hidden waterfall" (Additionally, Webelos will cook their own lunch). There will be no fee/charge for this activity.

The location is Hidden Falls Park, just across the Ford Parkway Bridge in St. Paul (use the north/Magoffin Ave. entrance. Park map here:

This is the tentative plan for Saturday:

Webelos who were planning to cook their own meals at camp will meet at the park at 11:45 a.m. to begin making a cook fire in one of the available fire pits. Kate Needelman will contact Webelo parents directly with more details/info.

All other Scouts can arrive at the park shortly before 1 p.m. We will roast marshmallows and enjoy s'mores before hiking to Hidden Falls. Scouts and parents should bring masks and wear them whenever/wherever they cannot distance themselves more than 6 feet away from other Scouts and parents (i.e. while roasting marshmallows around the fire, but then move more than six feet away from the area to remove your masks and eat your sweet treat).

Refunds coming
If you paid for Fall Camp via the Pack's Square billing site, you will receive a refund soon. If you do not receive your refund within the next week, email us at pack1mn@gmail.com and we will get it sorted.

Wreath Sale Camp Credits
Pack leaders are still brainstorming alternate rewards for Scouts who earned camp credit via wreath sales. One possibility is the Pack would pay the Scout's registration fee for a Polar Cubs camp this winter (these are day camps that Northern Star Council, not Pack 1, sponsor and staff). We are also investigating the possibility of renting the Base Camp facility off of Hwy. 62, where the Scout Shop is, and holding a Day Camp there, with archery and indoor rock climbing/rappelling. If we can make that happen, camp credit earned could be applied.

Again, we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I hope you'll join us at our alternate activity this Saturday, where we can still enjoy Scouting outdoors together.

2020 Wreath Sales are Underway

posted Aug 12, 2019, 7:48 AM by Pack 1 Minneapolis Cub Scouts   [ updated Sep 27, 2020, 9:04 AM ]

Welcome to the 2020 sales season! Our Wreath Sale is our only fundraiser of the year. We would like every Scout to sell at least $150 worth of items. Sales incentives include free Fall Camp and Spring Camp attendance for Scouts and parents, as well as a gift card for the Scout Store at Basecamp. With Covid 19 safety concerns in mind, we have developed a contact-free sales plan for this unique year.

Following is a link to a sales flyer template you can download, edit, and print out to distribute to your neighbors. We recommend distributing the flyer to the homes of only people you know.

Click the link below to get started. You may need to download and open the flyer template with a recent Acrobat reader to edit/customize it.

ScoutsFlyer2020.pdf

You will want to customize the flyer template by adding your Scout's first name and last name or first-initial-of-last name and your phone number or email address. Your customers will include your Scout’s name on their online order form, so a name must be provided to ensure that your Scout gets credit for the sale.

If you are not comfortable putting your Scout’s name on the flyer, you could instead use a code name/word – just be sure to let us know what it is, so we can match up your Scout’s orders up correctly. Adding a photo of your Scout to the flyer is optional; do so only if you are comfortable with that.

You can also send out a link to the ordering site in an email. Personalizing the email is a nice touch. The following link leads to the Square website from which your customers will order and pay for their wreath, garland, spruce tops, door swag, centerpiece and/or wild rice. The flyer includes directions for

Yes, Pack 1 is Scouting this year!!!

Hello Pack 1 Scouts and families!

As a new school year begins, so too starts another Scouting season – and this one will likely look much different than those that preceded it.

As you know, the Scout Motto is “Be Prepared.” Pack 1 leaders are committed to providing for Pack 1 Scouts a fun, adventuresome, educational and safe program of value, focused on enjoyment and appreciation of the outdoors, civic service, duty to God, Scout friendship and fellowship, and rank advancement.

While the realities of Covid 19 will require us to cancel a few of our usual events, there remain many core Scouting activities we can still enjoy — albeit in slightly different ways. Pack 1 leaders have developed, with BSA and Northern Star Council guidance, best practices to, among other things, safely meet semi-weekly to have fun and achieve advancement; camp together, sell wreaths and race Pinewood Derby Cars.

Meetings
While we cannot meet weekly in the classrooms at the church, as we have in years past, Den leaders will hold outdoor meetings in area parks (while the weather remains warm enough) for Scouts/parents comfortable being in small-group, socially-distanced outdoor settings. For Scouts/parents more comfortable with online connections, leaders can arrange online Zoom-type meetings and/or communicate directly with parents about using Scoutbook for a more home-led advancement track.

As fall weather grows colder and we run out of evening daylight, Den leaders, based on Scout/parent feedback, are prepared to switch to Sunday late-afternoon outdoor meetings and/or online Zoom-type meetings to continue enjoying fun activities that will meet advancement requirements. In outdoor meetings, we will, naturally, prioritize advancement activities that require being outdoors to undertake. In online meetings in the colder months, we will focus on advancement activities that can be either: enjoyed indoors in a video-meeting setting; completed individually, with parent oversight.

Pack meetings will be suspended for the time being. We are currently still brainstorming ways we can celebrate advancement and share the joys of Scouting as a larger group. Most likely we will use the coming-soon new Pack website and video.

Fall 2020 Pinewood Derby car races planned

posted Oct 17, 2018, 9:31 AM by Pack 1 Minneapolis Cub Scouts   [ updated Sep 27, 2020, 9:22 AM ]

We are planning to race Pinewood Derby cars outdoors this fall, fairly soon, to make up for the Derby we missed last spring (with Scouts using the cars they built last winter/spring). Arrow of Light Scouts who crossed over last spring to Boy Scouts will be invited to our fall races.

We are planning to hold races in heats by Den, in small groups, at assigned times. Championship races, amongst Den winners, will be held later in the day, again, in small groups. Most likely, we will not be able to run the usual Pinewood Derby computer software to digitally determine winning cars, so we'll just have to do this via the "old school" method of leaders and parents watching closely and agreeing which car finished first. We will share more details soon.
