Fall Camp Cancelled; Alternate Outdoor Activity Planned for Sat. Oct. 24 at Hidden Falls Park

It is with great disappointment that we regretfully announce that, due to the recent snowfall and a forecast for exceptionally cold weather for Saturday (daytime high of 30 degrees; nighttime high of 20), Pack 1 must cancel its Fall Camp at Stearns Scout Camp.

Most families that signed up for Fall Camp were not planning to stay the night, based on earlier weather reports, so we did consider switching to a Day-Camp-only mode. However, a majority of Pack 1 den leaders agreed that 30 degrees would be too cold to safely host archery and BB-gun shooting sessions during the day, and without those two highlight activities available to us, the leaders questioned if it made sense to drive almost 90 minutes to engage in alternate outdoor activities that we could just as easily enjoy nearby in a local park (i.e. hiking, sledding, snow fort building, etc.).

To that end, we are indeed planning to meet locally on Saturday, Oct. 24, for some alternate outdoor, camp-like activities -- roasting marshmallows for s'mores and a hike to a "hidden waterfall" (Additionally, Webelos will cook their own lunch). There will be no fee/charge for this activity.

The location is Hidden Falls Park, just across the Ford Parkway Bridge in St. Paul (use the north/Magoffin Ave. entrance. Park map here:

This is the tentative plan for Saturday:

Webelos who were planning to cook their own meals at camp will meet at the park at 11:45 a.m. to begin making a cook fire in one of the available fire pits. Kate Needelman will contact Webelo parents directly with more details/info.

All other Scouts can arrive at the park shortly before 1 p.m. We will roast marshmallows and enjoy s'mores before hiking to Hidden Falls. Scouts and parents should bring masks and wear them whenever/wherever they cannot distance themselves more than 6 feet away from other Scouts and parents (i.e. while roasting marshmallows around the fire, but then move more than six feet away from the area to remove your masks and eat your sweet treat).

Refunds coming
If you paid for Fall Camp via the Pack's Square billing site, you will receive a refund soon. If you do not receive your refund within the next week, email us at and we will get it sorted.

Wreath Sale Camp Credits
Pack leaders are still brainstorming alternate rewards for Scouts who earned camp credit via wreath sales. One possibility is the Pack would pay the Scout's registration fee for a Polar Cubs camp this winter (these are day camps that Northern Star Council, not Pack 1, sponsor and staff). We are also investigating the possibility of renting the Base Camp facility off of Hwy. 62, where the Scout Shop is, and holding a Day Camp there, with archery and indoor rock climbing/rappelling. If we can make that happen, camp credit earned could be applied.

Again, we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I hope you'll join us at our alternate activity this Saturday, where we can still enjoy Scouting outdoors together.
